Anyone who has experienced struggles with fertility knows that there are many factors that can affect both overall health and more specifically fertility health. Some of the struggles can be associated with situations that are not within our control, while others might be environmental. What can be managed, however, and make an important impact on your fertility health, is the addition of supplemental vitamins to your daily routine.
Hann’s Pharmacy has a long history of assisting people building a family with their fertility medication as they undergo fertility treatments. In addition to this, our fertility specialist pharmacists advise about what vitamins and supplements are the best for creating the optimal environment for fertility success.
What supplements are the most effective for fertility health?
Medical research continues in the field of fertility and supplements, namely because the science continues to be both refined, and every person’s body is different! So there’s really not a “one size fits all” set of supplements. However, there is a long list of supplements that can benefit both women and men who are struggling with fertility.
The following is a partial list of vitamins that can have a positive effect on fertility. A Hann’s Pharmacy professional can further define those that can benefit you during the course of your treatment:
- Folic Acid: Folic acid is not only highly recommended during pregnancy, but also before, as it has shown to be an important factor in success with fertility treatments.
- Iron: Iron deficiency has been shown to be a potential issue with infertility. Supplementing with iron can be an important part of ovulatory fertility.
- Zinc: A 2019 study showed that lower levels of zinc were associated with taking a longer time to conceive.
- Prenatal multi-vitamin: A good multi-vitamin will have the appropriate vitamins to give you the necessary nutrients you need to prepare for fertility treatments and potential conception. Healthline.com recommends prenatal vitamins should include the following:
- 400 mcg folate at minimum (consider using the active methylated form)
- 300 mg choline at minimum
- 150 mcg iodine
- 18 mg iron
- 600 IU vitamin D, at least
Hann’s Pharmacy recommends the Thorne Fertility Bundle. It includes their Basic Prenatal, 5-MTHF 1 mg, which is an active form of folate, and Omega Plus, a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Because a certain percentage of the population has a genetic variance that can interfere with converting folic acid to its active form 5-MTHF, Thorne recommends including this active, tissue-ready form of folate in a preconception and pregnancy supplement regimen. Other vitamins and minerals are also recommended, including vitamins D, C, A, and E, iodine, calcium, and magnesium. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement, containing EPA and DHA, can also be included, particularly if you do not eat a lot of fish.
Fertility treatment continues to evolve but adding in appropriate supplements can be a key factor in providing overall and long-term fertility success.
