Ganirelix Acetate is an injectable medication used to address female infertility. Continue reading for more information on how to best use this medication.
What Is Ganirelix Acetate?
Ganirelix Acetate is known as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist. This drug class blocks your pituitary gland from producing follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) and luteinizing hormones (LH). When these hormones are stopped in women, the ovaries will stop making estrogen and progesterone, preventing the eggs from releasing too early. Taking Ganirelix can allow eggs to grow properly and have a higher success in retrieval rate for fertilization.
Ganirelix Acetate Injection Instructions
As we mentioned before, Ganirelix is a subcutaneous injection medication, meaning it can only be administered with a needle below the skin. This medication can be given safely at home when following these instructions:
- Pre-injection preparation: Wash your hands with soap and water before beginning. Gather all your supplies for easy access, including the prefilled syringe, disinfectant swabs and a safe container for discarding used supplies.
- Select injection site: Ganirelix can be injected in the abdomen, navel or upper thigh. Clean your chosen area with a disinfectant swab and let it dry.
- Uncap syringe: Hold the needle upward and remove the cover.
- Inject medication: Pinch a large area of skin at the site, insert the needle at a 45-90 degree angle and slowly press the syringe plunger until empty. Pull out the needle and discard it safely and correctly.
Please refer to our Ganirelix injection training guide for more detailed information on administration.
Important Safety Information
A Ganirelix injection is pre-packaged in a single-dose, sterile syringe. After a dose, the needle should not be used again or mixed with other medications.
Before you take Ganirelix, please be sure to discuss your allergen information with your doctor or pharmacist. This product may contain latex and can cause allergic reactions. You should also disclose any medication you are taking to ensure no interactions.
It is also important to understand the potential side effects of Ganirelix before continuing. Mild symptoms — such as redness at the injection site, headache, mild nausea or tiredness — are common. If these effects last or become worse, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Ganirelix can also have more severe side effects. In these rare cases, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) can develop, building fluid in the stomach, heart and chest. Immediately seek medical attention if you experience severe pain or swelling in the lower abdomen, sudden weight gain, decreased urination or severe nausea.
