Fertility FAQ’s – Part 2

At Hann’s Pharmacy, we realize that your journey to parenthood may include a lot of questions. Read on for the second part of our Fertility FAQ’s Series, as we provide you with the most comprehensive answers from our pharmaceutical experts.

What should I do if I suspect I am having trouble with fertility?

If you are in good health and have been attempting to get pregnant for at least a year (or, six months if you are over the age of 35), you will want to consider a visit to your OB/GYN doctor for evaluation and possible testing for infertility. Many things can contribute to possible fertility issues, including irregular menstrual cycles, light or heavy cycles with strong cramps, male infertility, your age (especially if you are over 35), weight, chronic illnesses, lifestyle choices, and/or a variety of other factors which have to be determined. Make an appointment and see your doctor to determine what might be causing a delay in becoming pregnant, as a medical professional can provide an expert diagnosis and offer you solutions.

Is there anything I can do besides taking these fertility medications that can help me have success with my treatment?

Absolutely! Simple lifestyle changes go hand in hand with making fertility medications and treatment more successful. We would highly recommend maintaining a healthy weight, daily exercise, and choosing foods that support a healthy environment for conception and pregnancy. For example, avoid highly processed foods and choose whole foods including dark, leafy greens, beans, dairy, lean protein, and fiber. In addition, throughout your treatment timeline, avoid alcohol and smoking – instead, instill a daily, moderate exercise habit: walking, swimming, or yoga, for example. And, of course, don’t forget to take a daily prenatal vitamin! Creating the best environment for your future baby is your ultimate goal.

Does my fertility medication require special handling?

Many types of fertility medication, such as compounded leuprolide triggers or micro leuprolide, require refrigeration to preserve their longevity and effectiveness. Some fertility medications, such as Cetrotide, come as pre-measured powders that need to be kept at refrigeration and then mixed with water before injecting. Other medications, such as Menopur or Novarel, do not need their powders refrigerated but should be mixed with water just prior to injecting. In summary is important to understand all the different kinds of storage requirements as they vary with each medication.

What is prescribed for you will be specific, and the instructions for use and storage will be discussed with you thoroughly before beginning your treatment. At Hann’s we have a dedicated medication storage guideline sheet so it is easy to reference in one place!

Will this medication make me feel sick?

As with any medication, your doctor or pharmacist will discuss any possible side effects before you begin your treatment. In particular, fertility medications have been known to cause any of the following: bloating, stomach tenderness, headaches, mood swings, weight gain, dizziness, breast tenderness, and hot flashes, among others. If you experience anything that feels abnormal or more extreme, contact your doctor right away for an evaluation and possible changes to your regimen.

Do I need to have food on my stomach for any of my fertility medications?

While it’s not necessary to have eaten before you take or inject your fertility medications, having a good base of something light and healthy in your stomach will help you potentially curb any possible nausea or other side effects you might feel. As noted before, choosing a healthy diet at all times is always best for you and the success of your treatment.
