Fertility issues can happen for a variety of reasons. Some women have difficulty getting pregnant because their ovulation cycle begins prematurely. Cetrotide is a fertility medication that stops eggs from releasing too early using a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
GnRH works in women to promote healthy levels of estrogen and progesterone, as well as stimulate the growth of an egg and facilitate its release. When your body doesn’t have enough of these hormones, it can prematurely send out an egg before it matures properly in the ovary.
Cetrotide injections are often used with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. This procedure extracts healthy eggs and fertilizes them with sperm in a laboratory setting. With the help of Cetrotide, your eggs can take the time they need to grow and mature in the ovary before being removed for IVF.
Cetrotide Injection Instructions
Cetrotide is an injectable medication used subcutaneously in the abdomen. Cetrotide is a powder that must be mixed with water before injection.
Hann’s Fertility Pharmacy will meet with you when you come to get your medication and train you on how to mix, prepare, inject and dispose of it. We also provide Cetrotide injection guides to assist in proper medication administration. If you are a visual learner, you can check out the Cetrotide injection video.
Important Safety Information
If you have been prescribed Cetrotide medication, you should know the following instructions for your safety.
Before Taking Cetrotide
Check with your doctor before taking Cetrotide to ensure you are not currently pregnant. This medication can overstimulate your ovaries, which may cause complications in an existing pregnancy.
Discuss any current medical conditions, medications, supplements and herbal treatments with your doctor.
Cetrotide Storage Information
Cetrotide should be stored away from light in a refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not use Cetrotide if it has been left out in a car or on the counter for an extended period.
Possible Side Effects
It is common to experience swelling, itching and redness at the injection site. These reactions should be mild and temporary. If you begin to experience symptoms of an allergic response, please contact your doctor right away.
Proper Disposal Techniques
Because Cetrotide is an injectible medication, you will be dealing with needles and syringes. An FDA-approved disposal container is recommended for your safety. However, if you cannot access one, avoid using your household trash can and find an upright, heavy-duty, leak-free plastic container.
